One of the first steps in the process of constructing or renovating your exterior is seeking out a well-qualified, fully-licensed contractor for the job. Hiring a construction professional is a confusing process for many people, as they don’t know what questions to ask. Recognizing this, we’ve compiled a list of a few questions to get you started.

Here are Siding Washington’s suggestions of questions to ask potential hires:

  • When did you first start installing siding?
  • Do you have a full and valid contractor’s license?
  • Does your quote include unexpected circumstances, such as delays?
  • Is exterior construction and renovation your main business?
  • What exterior materials are you familiar with?
  • When can you begin work on this job?
  • How long do you think the job will take from start to finish?

Once you have gone through all of these questions with your interviewee, you should have a good sense of their qualifications and experience. If you have found a candidate that you like and are confident in his or her ability to do the job well, the next step is to draw up a contract. Before you sign, make sure that it outlines all services and costs that you have agreed upon.

SIDING MATERIAL COST COMPARISON

New residential and commercial exteriors are amenable to a wide spectrum of budgets. Whether you have unlimited funds or you are remodeling on sparse cash, siding is available to you. If you are able to afford it, it is advisable to invest in nicer, longer-lasting materials, as they will serve you better over time. In addition to basic material costs, however, there are a number of financial considerations to take into account.

Here is a list of potential financial factors:

  • Will there be any costly post-installation work–such as staining, treating, or painting–required?
  • Does the manufacturer offer a guarantee or warranty for the product in case it is faulty?
  • Will local weather be particularly damaging to the material?
  • What will your building look like when the installation is complete?

SIDING INSTALLATION COST

Installation costs vary from region to region and builder to builder. Local supply and demand are the largest predictor of price, followed by the experience and training of the contractor. Other, less influential, factors include the quality and brand of the materials that you choose and the architectural structure of your building.

Labor cost also varies, typically running somewhere between $6 and $12 per square foot. The easiest and least expensive material to install is vinyl, making it a popular choice. The most beloved exterior product in the Washington D.C. area, however, is fiber cement. This product is tricky to install, and its construction costs are mid-range for the sector. At the top of the range is cedar, a difficult material to work with an install.

If you choose to go the DIY route and perform the installation yourself, you can renovate the exterior of your home and put in new vinyl siding for the low cost of $5/sq. foot. Self-installing your new exterior is less expensive upfront, but does not necessarily save you money over time. Properly, professionally installed siding lasts an impressively long time, whereas self-installed siding often does not. It is well worth the investment to hire a licensed, experienced contractor.

Our testimonials

"What a great job!"

I am so, so glad that we picked Siding Washington to redo our home exterior. They put such effort and precision into the work, and it really shows! The owners were friendly and easy to work with, always making sure that my wife and I were up to date on the project’s progress. Our home was, I think, particularly difficult to redo. Our house is very close to our neighbor’s and it was a tight fit for the new boards. It didn’t seem to be a problem for the Siding Washington crew, though. The house looks wonderful, and they stayed on schedule and within our budget. I couldn’t be happier!

"Thank you, Siding Washington!"

Our old siding had been installed well over thirty-five years ago and was looking very shabby. Out home was in desperate need of a facelift, and Siding in Washington was able to provide just that. I did a good bit of research on siding contractors in the area before setting on this company. They gave me the best quote and they were so friendly and easy to work with. Their crew was out to our house the day after I decided to hire them, which was very impressive. They had reasonable rates and skilled workers. I am very pleased with the results. Thanks to everyone at Siding Washington.

"Great group of experts"

Siding Washington has the best customer service I have ever encountered in the construction industry. The owner was fantastic and extremely patient, helping me go over all of my options. I was on a tight budget, so we brainstormed all the ways we could get the job done without a lot of cash. In the end, we decided to replace two of the most damaged walls right now and get the others in a year or two, once I’ve replenished my renovation fund. It was a great experience, I loved working with all of the people I met, and I would absolutely work with them again. I highly recommend Siding in Washington!

"Impressive work"

Siding Washington came out and tore down our old siding, replacing it with brand new James Hardie panels. They were very patient with us as we made up our minds about the product, style, color, and texture. When we finally decided on our particular combination, the owner was quick and wonderful with the response. We had a crew out at our house within hours. They were great people, very polite, and always cleaned up the site before they left for the day.
